It`s the Harry Potter poster, but if you look closely they photoshopped the background and put a building in Roppongi instead. LOL JAPAN

1. I liked the Harry Potter Half-Blood Prince movie better than the book. Ginny was pretty and didn`t annoy the hell out of me, TonksxRemus was understated and sweet (of course, I`m still SiriusxRemus all the way), they made Draco a more sympathetic character, and DUMBLEDORE MADE ME CRY. When they went in the cave to get the horcrux I chirped, "Welcome to the Mines of Moria!" with my best Gimli voice, and [info]itako said "YOU SHALL NOOOT PAASSS" during the fire scene, haha. Luna was breathtaking, she`s absolutely adorable. Also, is it just me or RON IS SO FUCKING HOT IN THIS MOVIE?! Besides the Quidditch victory shots and the orgasmic love potion facial expressions, I kept on staring at his toned arms throughout the whole thing. Rrrrupert!

2. ...To be proposed to by a drunken Japanese salaryman in a dirty sidewalk is probably the saddest, most bizarre thing I`ve ever experienced.

We were there just chilling in front of the convenience store and sipping our juice. One drunken salary man even sat next to my American friend and started chatting her up (she pretended to be Spanish). Another salaryman just ambled over and sprawled in front of me (he couldn`t even kneel, he was so drunk) and asked me to marry him. Next thing you know, two Japanese dudes pass by and shout "We love white chicks!" to my American friends. NOW YOU KNOW WHY I HATE MEN Fuckers. It`s quite funny when you think back, but I was pretty pissed.

3. In geeky news, I bought a huuuge Star Wars poster with all the characters in it! I am seriously contemplating pasting my fugly face next to Han Solo and Darth Vader. Mmmm. ♥ I've also completed all quests and 100+ characters in Suikoden Tierkreis, and I`m delaying the final battle by obsessively levelling up my favourite characters. I SHIP HET IN SUIKODEN T., WHYYY? Except for Hero x Everyone Else, of course. In Phoenix Wright Trials and Tribulations, I`m near the last trial, and it breaks my heart. Oh, I`m so in love with everyone in this series. Yes, everyone -- there is no hatred. Oh well, maybe except Larry Butz, but he helps...sometimes.

Japanese TV -- or the Softbank post

 • Jul. 10th, 2009 at 11:15 PM
not interesting
The thing about Japanese TV is that the mostly entertaining things you could watch are the commercials. That might sound pretty harsh but their shows consist of food, comedy, food, drama, a bit of news, and food again. You can never tell when the news programs end or begin -- you might be watching something about swine flu, then next thing you know a comedian is wearing a bee costume and swimming in a pool. Also, an influx of commercials featuring that SMAP dude who ran around drunk and naked. Woopie!

Japanese commercials are highly interesting, though. My favourites would have to be those from Softbank (a major telecommunications company in Japan). Here's one I just watched earlier:

This is hilarious; it features Brad Pitt. He looks pretty cute here. Although there's something mildly sinister bout the whole thing, but it is very adorable in a strange, Japanese way. I see Brad Pitt's Softbank ads all over Tokyo -- they must have tons of money to put his face everywhere.

There's also the whole Otousan commercial gimmick, an ongoing Softbank ad featuring a Japanese family with the twist -- the mother and daughter are Japanese, but the son is an African-American, and their father is a white dog, who eerily looks like the Akito dog breed Hachiko. Yes. Here's one of my favourites, with English subtitles. :) Quite adorable, I highly recommend!

(Uh, I'm not getting paid to advertise Softbank. In fact I'm using AU right now. I swear! ._.)

In other news, [info]itako just bought a scanner! Yay~! To celebrate, I drew a two-page comic of I'm in love with a geek boy. It's not up yet, and I probably won't be able to enhance things in photoshop, but it should be alright. I haven't been ignoring Dave and Colin, they're still very close to my heart ♥

On Remakes, Nostalgia, and More Remakes

 • Jul. 7th, 2009 at 12:55 PM
transformer obama
Look at the roster of movies showing and coming soon. Look at the bunch of movies everybody keeled over in the news, the internet. Check out [info]fandomsecrets .

This era is the dawn of the remakes.

'Tis true. Everytime I check the news, I am always updated with some crazy rumour about a remake. Most purists scream in terror, but others who cling to the memories of Saturday morning just watching cartoons with heavy metal intros await eagerly for more information. We've had Transformers -- more than meets the eye -- only with more boobies and pop culture references. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull got Indy and Marion together in the end, Star Trek had new and improved CGI and pretty Kirk and Spock. We had chibi!Rorschach hack, slash, and maim his way to our hearts in Watchmen. Dragonball Evolution was the joke of the month.

This is not limited to movies as well, though it is up front. It's all the rage in anime as well. Lately I've been seeing Rei Ayanami's distorted body all over Japan's subways, promoting the latest Evangelion movie. The latest popular anime have been nothing but episodic parodies of something, may it be oldschool anime or Naruto. That, and mere fanservice for millions of consumers.

Everyone's milking something for all its worth.

I point fingers at myself as well. I'm pretty much a fan of everything that is oldschool (and boring and campy to some). I spend time in youtube just surfing for old cartoon opening songs. I've been repressing this urge to download the whole season of the old Power Rangers, just for kicks. I'm not afraid to rock out to Backstreet Boys in karaoke. The thing is, everything we ever loved in childhood but was too afraid to admit in highschool is RETRO now. It's now okay to admit that you had a poster of the Spice Girls on your wall, and when you hang out with friends you play Aqua songs on the computer and dance dorkily to it. The whole world has been hit by a strong sense of longing for the past, and the entertainment business has caught on.

Now there's a new Karate Kid without Mr. Miyagi on the works. There's Cowboy Bebop with Keanu Reeves, and the whole internet is lulzing over that fact. The Adventures of Tin Tin is in production with Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson in tow. And somewhere out there, people are selling Carebears and Rainbow Brite t-shirts.

Is the lack of new creative output the result of mere laziness? Were the oldschool things just better than what we have now? Do we all just want to be kids again, or is there just no material left?

Lesson for the Day = Wat

 • Jun. 28th, 2009 at 7:20 PM
i know u want me
So [info]itako , Matthew, Claire and I were invited by these Japanese students from an English Club to go on an "Akihabara Tour" with an interview for their article of sorts. I ended up buying a Kurapika and Leorio cellphone strap (that I now hang lovingly on my wall, because they are meant to be) and going to all these different places with anime goods. Dined in a maid cafe called "Cure Cafe" (whatever that means) which had this crazy Evangelion theme going on. The maids wore those weird clips Asuka and Rei wear, they sold Eva merchandise, and Zankoku na Tenshi no You Ni played over and over again. That, and posters of Rei being naked everywhere. When is she not naked? Anyway, if it wasn't for the epic rain I would have hung out more, but alas, had to go back home because I felt really sick. I did learn a LOT of things. One of the girls (named Tomomi) was a big Hagaren fan, and a fujoshi. Jacinda, Tomomi and I would sometimes giggle in a corner, talking about pairings and stuff. I realize I am still quite in the closet, which is sad.

Anyway, our lesson for the day starts with a conversation about MOTHERFUCKING METAL GEAR SOLID, YO! I started talking about Metal Gear Solid to Takuya, who was also a big fan. Ended up raving about it. (following conversation in Japanese:)

Takuya: Who do you like in Metal Gear Solid?
Me: SOLID SNAKE. AND OTACON.
Takuya: Ooh, Otacon! Shibui!
Me: Huh?

Takuya and Tomomi then tried to explain to Jacinda and I what Shibui means. Apparently it's one of those very cultural expressions, they had a hard time explaining it, but here's a list of what they could mean:

SHIBUI

- Something that is simple, maybe flawed, yet beautiful.
- If you have refined taste
- If your tastes lean towards something a bit older <-- JACKPOT
- and many others

So yeah, I would call myself "shibui" in a sense that I like older people (THAT EXPRESSION WILL BE PUT TO GOOD USE), but apparently Takuya meant that I had refined taste. Which...I wouldn't exactly associate with liking a Metal Gear Solid character who's ripped, and another one who pisses in his pants. It could also mean that Otacon is simple, flawed, yet elegant. Wat

Takuya: What about Raiden? (obviously, he likes him. I think only Japanese people have boners for Raiden, America thinks he's too fruity)
Me: Too young.
Takuya: What about Ocelot?
Me: Too old!!! *lol*

And then while going home, Tomomi and I were chatting about our favourite pairings. I tried to use my broken japanese meep.
Tomomi: My type of BL pairing are the adults!
Me: ME TOO ME TOO
Tomomi: For example I like Kakashi/Iruka, and in Full Metal Alchemist, I like Roy/Hughes!
Me: How about Hunter x Hunter?
Tomomi: Ooh, I like Leorio...
Me: ME TOO OMG --
Tomomi: ...with Hisoka!
Me: wat

List # 5036206

1. Michael Jackson is dead. What the fuck.

2. Still playing Suikoden Tierkreis and being obsessed with it. I realized I have all these blondes in my usual party -- Jale, Chrodechild, and Diadora. Not that I have a thing for blondes (...usually) but they're really hot strong characters and yeah.

Why does everyone have a major boner for someone in this game? Taj's boner for Shams is so huge, it's just whoa, overwhelming. Everyone seemingly wants to drop their pants in front of the main character, shouting "TAKE ME, PLEASE". Jale is so whipped by his mom and his Hero-boyfriend. Everyone wants a piece of someone. Subordinates are insanely loyal to their masters. The furries are sexy.

3. Happy birthday, Drea! AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY RL MUM ♥ And to all the people whose birthdays I've missed, I give you full power to smack me like a bitch. I am so bad with dates, I even missed one important school event last wednesday and now I feel like shit. T_T

4. You know you're fucked up when you read gay manga without english translations and can UNDERSTAND things. Granted, I should be joyful that my Japanese has really gone a long way, but I'm not sure if knowing the Japanese for "Does it feel good inside you? Can I put it in?" and "Blow job" are things one should know and put to practical use. Hmmm. I feel kind of pathetic right now.

5. I saw Gackt in a Japanese comedy show the other night, still trying to look like the coolest guy ever amidst a crowd of not-so-handsome comedians. Now, sometimes I think Japanese comedy is funny. It is a rare occurrence, however. They still rely on slapstick, which is so last decade, and they make fun of ugly/fat people ALL THE TIME. It's horrible. I hate those kinds of shows with a burning passion. Nevertheless, I do like the "educational" comedy shows, where they pose trivia questions and all these minor celebrities have to answer them. They still have the "blonde girl" stereotype somewhere though, like the pretty girl who has a brain of a pea, and the random crossdresser. Formulaic, indeed.

Now I was looking at Gackt and I am seriously convinced he has sold his soul to the devil. Or paid a handsome amount for plastic surgery, I don`t know. He still looks so young. And pretty. And a vampire. WHY.

6. Watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with [info]itako and friends last night. I remember watching it before, but rewatching it made me realize how hilarious it is (I thought it was too complicated). It's fun to see Robert Downey Jr. have so many scenes with this really hot woman, only to end up kissing Val "Gay Perry" Kilmer. Twice. Fun times!

6. Now I`m off to prepare for a formal party at a bar in Shibuya! Things should be interesting. I might spend the rest of the evening stuffing myself with something, since I haven`t been eating properly in days...or drinking, since it's a nomihodai. Now my friends are joking that when I go back to the Philippines I`ll be downing alcohol like no tomorrow, eating a whole lechon out of one hand and swearing like an Australian (just kidding,
[info]itako , you know I love you)! xD

DO YOU WANT TO HAVE A

JESUS BODY

Saw those products while Matthew and I were on our way to buy groceries. Laughed my ass off. This is definitely the sort of thing the people behind God Hates *insert random thing here* will throw a hissy fit at.

So, I've been really busy. Finally had my Nihongo midterms, and now we're starting on a new Intermediate textbook. Been watching a lot of movies, reading books, articles etc. for class. I'm actually taking a break from writing two papers right now. Whee! How is everyone?

Find out more about Jesus Body! Nihongo, Kabuki's Lady boys, Suikoden Tierkreis, Phoenix Wright, cooking, myself as a MANLY MAN, etc. )

In other news, [info]itako and I just reserved tickets for a Perfume concert in Yokohama. O_O; I don't know what came over us. Planning to watch Angela Aki in August. I can't miss her, definitely!

There's the site. You can check out both the cinematic trailer and some snippets of the gameplay and shit. I want to see all the neat Beatles tidbits the Apple company inserted. ♥ Just when I thought I couldn't get enough of The Beatles, they surprise me with this!

Oh, and if there's one thing I have in common with Japan, it's that they love the Beatles. I've been to many shops where they play The Beatles songs, and everyone knows them. Merchandise are scarce in the Philippines but here I managed to get Beatle-themed folders and t-shirts. Lots of vintage stuff. Life is good. ♥

First Haul of the Month

No idea what we're doing
Contrary to popular belief, Japan is not all about mecha, samurai, ninjas, and lolis. It's not all about anime.

However, that does not stop me from buying random shiz, for myself and for other people. I swear to god, BOOK-OFF will be the death of me. They sell manga for only 105 yen, and the Book-off near our uni has an entire huge basement dedicated to books written in English. They even have cheap art books asdfghjkl; Most people spend on food, others spend on shopping. I splurge on books.

Everything is expensive in Tokyo, but if you convert anime merchandise and books in peso and then compare them to prices back at home then they're really cheap. Plus they have anime merchandise of ANYTHING. I have yet to see the used panties vending machine (and I don't really want to, anyway), but they do sell cookies featuring anime characters, and life-sized pillows with underwear-clad girls printed on them. Lol Japan.

SHINJUKU, TOKYO MAY 12, 2009
STAR TREK PREMIERE NIGHT

So I was moping around because according to my f-list I am the last person who hasn't seen it yet, orz. I decided to go to Shinjuku with friends and to eat at an all-you-can-eat shabu-shabu. Suddenly, I saw a huge crowd and THE USS ENTERPRISE gleaming from afar! There was a huge poster of Star Trek, and I immediately wet my pants with glee.

BEFORE I KNEW IT, I SAW JOHN CHO (Sulu), ZACHARY QUINTO (Spock) and KARL URBAN (McCoy) on the red carpet. In the flesh!!!11 I was squealing, but the rest of the Japanese were deadpan because they're not well-known actors. However, they started screaming when they saw X-Japan members. Lol. MEANWHILE I WAS ALL "YOU BITCHES DON'T KNOW ABOUT MY STAR TREK! OUTTA MY WAY!!!"

Photos under the cut )

Now I have to watch it even if I'm alone or I'll go crazy!

A List Because I Like Lists:

1. Receiving a lap dance is not so bad. *JENENT* Receiving a lap dance from a gay guy? HILARIOUS. and slightly incriminatory
2. Nope, I haven't watched Star Trek because in Japan Hollywood movies show up 4232626 days later. I have ignored all posts squee-ing over Spock's testicles to spare myself the pain of being the last person who hasn't watched it yet. I SHAKE MY MIDDLE FINGER AT THE PEOPLE WHO USED TO RIDICULE TREKKIES AND ARE NOW RAGING FANGIRLS! REPENT, AND SEND ME YOUR NEWLY-WRITTEN GAY LITERATURE!

I've also been very...lost when it comes to fandom matters, because I've been busy all the time. And the only thing I ever blog about are my crazy adventures. T_T

3. I can buy my DSi in Akiba now, woo-hoo! I'm planning on getting the neon-green one, because you rarely see those. Now I can play Cooking Mama use the kanji dictionary for class!

4. Last weekend we had a Japanese Cultural Day where we made ikebana, origami, calligraphy, and tried on kimonos. I was asked to be the female kimono model, which was embarrassing, but so worth it. After that, we held a costume party at the dorm, which ended up pretty...wild. xD

Ikebukuro = Lovely, lovely place. I love walking around Sunshine Street. We ate at a Shakey's that was EAT ALL YOU CAN for 800 yen, pretty cheap here in Tokyo. I also invaded a building that had seven floors just literally filled with BL manga, doujinshi, and other merchandise. EVERYTHING WAS ALL ABOUT BLATANT GAY PORN, WOOHOO. What's really awkward is that most of the BL stores I've been to only have all-male staff. I don't get that. O_O; Like they say, Ikebukuro is Akiba for girls.

Akihabara = Has cramped buildings dedicated to all things technology. Also has a lot of anime shops, arcade centers, and blatant pornography. Got stared at a lot since I was a small girl randomly entering an all-male territory. But I had gaijin power *, so what the hey.

Cloud has his own fucking magazine. I'm really starting to loathe what Square-Enix is doing to the FF VII franchise...

* The ability to do things normal Japanese people wouldn't do. i.e. sing and dance at random, have engaging conversations in the train -- I mean we aren't making any noise, but the Japanese are eerily quiet in the train for some reason.

Yuri is me.

saving the world
Classes started a while ago. Met up with my professors for Kabuki and Sumi-e. For the Kabuki class we're required to watch kabuki in the Ginza theatre every month. I AM SUPER EXCITED TO SEE THE girly boys onnagata! Sumi-e sounds ultra fun, and since I've tried it already it'd be nice to work on it again. Plus we get to exhibit our works for our final project. Fffffor the win.

...I HAD THIS EPIC REALIZATION IN NIHONGO CLASS A WHILE AGO

We were discussing the meanings of our names while using Japanese. I told my Yatabe-sensei that my mom got my name from her French professor: Szusza, which is actually Hungarian. She asked me what Szusza means in english. I said it means "lily".

Now I've known what Szusza means all my life. But somehow even after all the porn I've read I was so surprised when my sensei said,

"Ah, yuri?"

And then I just stared at her and smiled this really huge grin. Sensei was all "subarashiii! suteki!!!" Meanwhile my brain handed me images not really suitable for children, lol. I NEVER MADE THAT CONNECTION BEFORE, WHAT THE FUCK. So my name in Japanese is "yuri". That's...fucked up lol

***

Met up with [info]giethe and her classmates a while ago in Shibuya. You don't realize how happy I was to see a bunch of Filipinos and hang out with them. FINALLY, I CAN SPEAK IN FILIPINO! Woot! I took them to Sweets Paradise, which makes it the 146846161 time I've been there. Sweets Paradise is this restaurant where for ninety minutes you can eat all the dessert you want. It's absolutely sinful. I was so happy to meet Ate Krischelle in Shibuya. It was a surreal, but nice moment. :3 Tomorrow I'm showing them around at Harajuku. Yay!

Meanwhile, I now congratulate myself for roaming around on my own in Shibuya and managing to get home in one piece, even if I had to change lines. When I tell people how complicated the train stations are in Tokyo, they just don't understand. They overlap. There are like a million lines in just one station. Everything is so rushed and jampacked and confusing. I love Tokyo and my place in Okusawa, but I can't wait to visit other places soon. The city just doesn't do it for me ;___;

Japanese girls are extremely cute. I mean, I like the butch types, but I fear I'm slowly becoming butch myself. xD They're all so nice and hot and they dress very well. I'm so glad that even if Meiji Gakuin is a private school they're not like the stereotypical prim and proper students we see in anime. They're completely normal teenagers who love going around, eating out, and singing karaoke. One of the guys likes drinking cheap beer, too xD It's been awesome.

Meanwhile, I have yet to see Japanese men that really look like those I see on TV. Most of the guys look like the dude from the Densha Otoko series (whom I actually adore, mind you). There's this cute boy working at the 100 yen shop in Ookayama that I always go to. He's really frail-looking and girly and adorable, but he was so wimpy he couldn't even bag my purchases correctly. Oh well. I wanted to pat his head, but I just looked on amusedly as he looked so confused. xD I am an obaa-san

So while I'm here in Japan these are basically the essential things you and I need to know:

mobile no. (if you're from the phils) +639204058691
mobile no. (in japan) 09038088631

address: MG OKUSAWA HOUSE 1-41-12 Okusawa Setagaya-ku Tokyo 1580083

please keep 'em private. thank you!

I know I shouldn't be involved, but I was really hurt by your decision. Not because of the reasons behind it, but what you replaced instead, and now I feel inadequate. I don't know if you ever even PLAN on contacting me and actually telling me something I should've known before I got here. I guess you just want me to be blissfully unaware in Japan, huh?

I love you, take care, have a fun life.

we're so screwed
A quick one cos I just got back from Shibuya and my feet are screaming:

1) The toilets in here are seriously epic. Buttons! Buttons!
2) Matsumoto Jun's face is everywhere. In magazine covers, on the huge-ass screens in Shibuya...
3) ...So are the Tohoshinki boys. Took a couple of photos of Yunho, I'll upload them soon
4) I officially love Ookayama, which is this downtown area just a short walk from our dorm. The place has restaurants, lots of convenient stores, clothes...(*u*)/
5) My first non-practical purchase is a BL manga from Book-Free in Shibuya. HEY, there was a sale~ :P And it's from CJ Michalski, too. God I love that mangaka.
6) We explored like this really seedy part of Shibuya where there were loads of love hotels and massage parlors. I was afraid some random Oji-san would appear out of nowhere hrudu *has been reading too many manga* Hazukashiiiii @___@
6) Tomorrow we head off to Shirokanedai and then we have hanami on the weekend! I'm really looking forward to that! On Monday we have the placement test. I am so screwed.
7) Okay this Japanese keyboard is difficult to use.

Okay! I'm off to bed! おやすみ!

FINALLY! After weeks of literally no sleep to accomplish my requirements for school, I'm leaving tomorrow. It still hasn't sunk in yet. >_< This is a series of first times for me; first time traveling alone, first time in Japan (alone), and for a year too. I'm very excited and extremely nervous. Hurrhurr please Szusza, don't screw up!

Anyway, my plane (business class, baby~) leaves at 2:30 PM in Manila then I arrive at Narita Airport around 7:55 PM. I'll be staying overnight at Narita Port Hotel, then I'll be picked up the next day at 3 PM by the Meiji Gakuin bus, which will take us international students to our dorm in Setagaya-ku. There'll be an Orientation as well. This will be an action-packed week! *u*)/

Anyway, thank you very much and lots of love to the following:

Everyone who congratulated me thru text, LJ, multiply, etc. :D
UP AME and UP ASTERISK (I have your gifts and letters with me! I'll read them once I get there!)
My UP Art Studies family
And the Velasco family, the craziest family ever who supported me 100% I LOVE YOU ♥

I will miss you all! Please take care! Mata Rainen! :)

(By the way, don't text my old number anymore. I'll give you guys my new number soon. :D)
